Ok readers, since yesterday was the 4th of July and we didn't have the boat reports, we get double duty today!
First boat of Grady Garrett and Penny Shawback each had 8 fish on Friday, mostly trout but a few whiteys in there was well. The high was a 16.5" rainbow for Grady. Saturday on the Bitterroot, the fishing was down but still fun, they put 12 fish in the boat total, and had to work hard to do it!

Cam and Jeannot Carlson were next. Extravaganza vet Cam landed an 18" trout on Friday, and Saturday follwed up with a 17" brown and a number of 16 inchers as well. They also stuck it to Uncle Whitey, landing a ton of those guys!

Jim Hendrickson and Diane Denham were smoking the fish in the morning on Friday, but got hit by the lunch doldrums and things really cooled off in the afternoon. Still, they had 20 fish in the boat, with Diane getting an 18" and a 19" trout. The second day guide Chris took them to some secret hole on the bitterroot some 1/4 of a mile long, where they drifted 14 times over 2 hours, slamming the trouth hard! PRobably 16 big trout got reeled in out of there, with Jim grabbing two 19"ers!

Gene Gene the Fishing Machine Ferguson and Fred Johnson had a good friday, with a top fish measuring in at 18 3/4" and plenty of 15-18 inchers to back that up. Saturday their numbers went up, and they brought upwards of 30 fish on board, including another 18 3/4" cutthroat for Fred. Most importanly perhaps, the men started hitting fish on dry flies! We have mostly been throwing nymph rigs out there, so the switch to dries is a welcome change.

Josef Shepard and I fished together on Friday and did pretty well. I posted some photos of us having fun yesterday, so I'll spare you the rest of the glam shots and stick to the facts. we put 25 fish in the boat, lotta trout but several whiteys as well.
Today, Josef fished with brother Nicholas Shepard, and the two were on fire, hitting on nymphs and dries all day long! The biggest was an 18 1/2 incher, nice going!
Yesterday, Nicholas fished with father Brian Shepard and coaxed an solid 19" brown trout off the bottom and into the boat, and thet wo bagged 20 on the day.

Today, Brian had his annual fishing day with RCR. RCR, fishing from the rear of the boat, drew the dreaded bagel, but reports an enjoyable day despite the absent fish. Meanwhile, Brian battled a 19 1/2" rainbow in, largest fish on Saturday!

Which brings us to Gary Ford and Bruce Mowat, two rookies who fished with Captain Midnight, showing up late to the meetup spot half an hour late both days. Gary was down getting a chair massage, leaving Bruce to deliver the report. Friday got the men 12 fish, including a seldom seen brook trout for Bruce, as well as a 19" rainbow. Saturday, their numbers were down, but Bruce bagged his first brown trout ever, a beautiful 18"er.

Even though RCR disqualified the boat fished by myself and Tyler Clausen, I'm going to report on our success anyway, for posterity. We were on the Clark Fork, and there was just nothing doing out that way. I hit a cutty 10 minute in and then we had nary a bite for over 3 hours. We stopped at Rock Creek for lunch, and bank fishes some. Hit a good hole to get the skunk off and that's when our fun began. Back in the boat, we hit a couple side channel flows into the Clark Fork. I was like a Tijuana bartender during spring break down there, they were eating all my worms!!! I couldn't miss, I hit a fish every cast for like 6 in a row!! We got towed out of the prime fishing grounds after about an hour by a feisty 18" brown Tyler hooked into and landed. I won't go into why RCR disqualified our boat, I'll only say that there was really just a miscommunication and nothing was really anybody's fault. Especially not mine!

So congrats to our Yellow Hat Winners! Friday had a three way tie of Nicholas, Bruce and Diane, and Saturday's was captured by Brian!
