The Montana State Department of Fish and Wildlife advises fisherman to take extra precautions and be on the alert for bears while fishing on blue ribbon Rivers and creeks such as Rock Creek and Upper Rock Creek. They advise fisherman to wear noise-producing devices such as little bells on their clothing to alert, but not startle, the bears unexpectedly. They also advise you to carry pepper spray in the case of an encounter with a bear. It is also a good idea to watch for signs of bear activity.
Fisherman should be able to "recognize the difference" between Black Bear and Grizzly Bear droppings on trails and around creeks and rivers. Black Bear droppings are smaller and usually contain berries, fish bones and possibly fur from small animals. In Grizzly bear droppings you will find bells, sunglasses and fishing hats, and they smell like pepper spray.
