Hey, Gang, we are now officially "off the charts" on our Montana water flows, as this past weekend's heat wave was the equivalent of a flow torch applied to all of Missoula's surrounding mountain ranges. In fact, we had to make a new one!!
Attached is the best evidence of that:
(a) While traveling to the airport yesterday afternoon, our Rock Creek Log-O-Meter was, literally, a log jam, piled high with debris floating downstream, and, by the time Kathy returned to take the attached pictures, the Log-O-Meter, after faithfully serving for over five years as our trusty flow gage, was gone--...poof...broken off by the magnitude of the flowage and swept downstream to flow into the Clark Fork of the Columbia River and, eventually some day, out to sea.
And, (b), check out the attached Rock Creek Discharge report--gang, (it is also posted right below the weather button on Der Blog) where this Monday morning we are up to 3,700--yes, THREE THOUSAND SEVEN HUNDRED-- cubic feet per second on Rock Creek...over three times of what it was flowing this time last week, which, then, was ten times the flowage of just 45 days earlier, which, obviously is a 30x increase in just six weeks!! Talk about rock 'n' roll--that what's going on in and on our favorite fishing streams--a complete, thorough cleansing the likes of which haven't been seen for nearly a decade.
In fact, concerns of downstream flooding have been expressed in town (not at our place, by a long shot!), where, when I was meeting at a Clark Fork riverside hotel on Saturday, entire trees were headed down stream...come to think of it, maybe one of those was our Log-O-Meter!!
This is all good news for us, gang, for, as we enter the month of June and watch the water begin to subside--right around June 15th Rock Creek' visibility will clarify for excellent fishing, quickly followed thereafter by the Bitterroot River, The Clark Fork and, lastly but wonderfully, the Blackfoot ("A River Runs Through It") River!
